Teams in the categories of men, women and Under 21 from as many as thirty countries from around the World, come to Edmonton to compete in the 2008 World Canoe Polo Championships. The games take place on four pitches, each the size of a 50m swimming pool, erected in Hawrelak lake. Nets positioned 2m above the water are located at each end of the playing area somewhat like a basketball court. Two teams of five players in special polo kayaks, compete for possession of a standard water polo ball, and try to score in their opponents net.

The tribes of Treaty 7, (Kainai, Piikani, Siksika, Tsuu T'ina and Stoney Nakoda) have been camping at the Indian Village since 1912. The Treaty 7 First Nations and the Calgary Stampede present a cross-cultural exchange for First Nation dancers and drummers to perform their traditional dances and songs to offer insight into body movements, regalia, songs and sacred objects that are presented in the men's and women's dances. Visitors to the Indian Village can relax in a beautiful park setting while viewing demonstrations involving native dance, hand games, and tipi raising contests. Native interpreters are available for tours and will provide information and commentary regarding their culture and tipi designs.
